The Pink Rock Rose, being a member of the Cistus genus, includes several subspecies and varieties. The most common ones are Cistus creticus ssp. creticus and Cistus creticus ssp. eriocephalus. These subspecies exhibit minor differences in leaf and flower structure. Other Cistus species, such as Cistus ladanifer and Cistus albidus, share similar ecological niches but differ notably in flower and leaf morphology.

Growing Regions

The Pink Rock Rose is widespread in the Mediterranean climate zone. It can be found naturally in Spain, Portugal, southern France, Italy, Greece, and the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey. This plant thrives in limestone and siliceous soils, typically at altitudes ranging from sea level to 1,200 meters. It adapts well to hot and dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The Pink Rock Rose is also fire-resistant and can quickly recolonize habitats after wildfires.

Antioxidant Properties

The Pink Rock Rose contains polyphenolic compounds with strong antioxidant properties. These compounds include flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids. Notably, Cistus species are rich in flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and myricetin. These compounds help protect cells by reducing oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Due to its antioxidant properties, extracts from the Pink Rock Rose are used in skincare products, dietary supplements, and various pharmaceutical applications
